Recognized for her dedication and musicality, Mexican flutist and piccolist Alheli Pimienta is in demand as a solo recitalist and chamber musician. Appearances include venues in Mexico, the United States, and France. She has performed in youth and professional symphony orchestras throughout Mexico, the University of Idaho Symphony Orchestra, the Washington-Idaho Symphony, and the Walla Walla Symphony, both as guest soloist and flute or piccolo chair. Appreciated for her technical abilities and interpretation, Alheli has won national and international competitions such as The Crescendo Music Awards where she was awarded the Gold Medal as the first woodwind player to receive this honor, the National Flute Competition "Gildardo Mojica" in Mexico City where she won the second placement, the Seattle Women Music Competition, and the Concerto/Aria Competitions of the University of Idaho winning first and second prizes in multiple occasions.
On top of her classical training Alheli has explored 20th Century music and Latin Jazz becoming a versatile musician in many genres. One of her most important projects of her professional career was the creation of the Contemporary Music Project along with her co-worker the American percussionist and composer Kevin Kovalchik. The duo was awarded a Graduate Student Grant by the University of Idaho in 2007 for their continuous work of taking Contemporary Classical Music to young audiences of 18 different cities of the Northern United States. Also, Ms. Pimienta is currently the artistic director and the flutist and piccolist of the international new music ensemble Kokopelli: Musicians of the Americas, formed by percussionist Kevin Kovalchik, pianist Chad Spears, and accordionist Kent Queener.
A graduate of the University of Idaho and the Escuela Superior de Musica y Danza de Monterrey, where she studied with Merrie Siegel, Leonard Garrison, and Luis Alfredo Gonzalez respectively, Ms. Pimienta is now a member of the private studio of internationally acclaimed flutist Susan Hoeppner in Toronto, Canada. Besides her arduous practicing and love for performing, Ms. Pimienta enjoys teaching private lessons to students of all ages. The success of her students shows in their young careers by winning competitions and aspiring to become professional concert flutists.
Ms. Pimienta, enjoys different genres of music and dance. When she is not busy practicing, performing, or teaching, she enjoys dancing, spending time with her family, reading, and listening to her husband, jazz pianist Ian Sinclair, practice and compose at their apartment in Toronto.
