Theory & Harmony Classes

•Teacher Led Online Music Theory Classes•

This February 2022, marks our three-year “anniversary” with online music Theory, Harmony, and History classes. We appreciate the convenience and strengths of the format over in-person lessons. In addition to time saved commuting, students receive the full class time allocation for working with the teacher. Over a 12-week format, that adds an additional 6 hours of problem solving, presentation and student questions. Tests are completed by the student outside this allocation. Parents are required to return them in pdf format for grading. Students who require more time to complete a test can take that time and check their work before submitting it.
Class Requirements :
1. Students should have a quiet room with a desk to concentrate. They must copy procedures and examples completed in class, into their textbook.
2. Have a good Wi-Fi connection or directly connect the computer to the modem.
3. Students must complete the homework listed in the weekly homework planner.
4. Students must download, complete, and return weekly tests as PDF files.

•Classes on Replay•

Because virtual classes are recorded, if a student misses a class (or part of a class), they can view and review the video. If a student does not understand a certain point, they are able to view that section of the class again. Theory class videos are made accessible to students until the class finishes. Students are free to travel and attend their class from a hotel or campground if Wi-Fi is available.
While some parents believe students do not concentrate as fully on zoom, our findings clearly indicate that zoom offers an outstanding opportunity for uninterrupted learning. With “uncontrollable talkers” able to mute themselves, advantages outweigh disadvantages. Students can eat/drink without interrupting others, are not inclined to distraction from cell phones, can always hear the teacher and see the work being done in the textbook from a quiet environment. Zoom preserves an element of respect, calm and good behaviour to everyone’s benefit. The grades reflect improvements due to all the above factors.

•L8 Theory Price Comparison•

For some parents, price is the “only difference” when considering options. Comprehensive Theory Level 8 is $500 for class and book. Students then purchase the online study guide and exam for $175 to complete the requirement. If they choose the online study guides with exam, the 4 levels x $175 equal $700. There is not a significant difference. The true choice is interacting with a computer versus a teacher and classmates.

•Winter Theory Classes•

Music students are busy. Daily practice requirements intermingle with school homework and a variety of athletic and extra classes. Music theory, harmony and history classes require a dedicated minimum of one hour of work per day throughout the full week (7 hours of work per week). If the student misses a week, they need to complete the assigned homework and memory listed in the textbook. Plan to incorporate a Private Online Lesson with the instructor.
Students arrive early to have homework checked at the desk. Children with learning disabilities will require Private Online Lessons to supplement the classes. Enroll students who have forgotten their rudiments or harmony in Private Online Lessons at the start of the class to ensure understanding. Weekly tests allow parents to monitor progress, with mock exams at the end from the Official Examination Papers.

Eric Tan received the highest national theory average for all theory exams required for ARCT in Canada (excluding rudiments classes). His grade average was 95! See other National Gold Medal Winners from Ware.

Theory Classes require consistent and methodical minds to develop intellectual capacity. A positive, pro-active attitude is essential for students to absorb ideas.

•Teacher Led Online Music Classes•

Textbook and Practice sheets screen shared.

Teacher available for questions during the class. They demonstrate procedures and work examples with students. Extra online videos demonstrate single practice sheet from the textbook for review.

Recorded Virtual Online Classes are available for replay during the term.

Harmony and Level 5-8 Theory: 3 or more weekly tests. Parents can monitor progress for realistic expectations.

Students of Ware have gone on to Yale, Harvard, Princeton, and Cornell.
